Libros y Mapas

   When I am "on the road" I like reading something related to the area I visit. Maybe a novel or a travel book, something about photography and recently about seabirds.
   I don't use GPS but maps. Many times I have lost my way but sometimes I have found something interesting while I were "lost".
   When I leave home my car is plenty of BOOKS & MAPS and the load increases during the journey.

   Cuando estoy "en la carretera" me gusta leer algo relacionado con la zona que visito. A veces una novela o un libro de viajes, algo sobre fotografía y ultimamente sobre aves marinas.
   No utilizo GPS sino mapas. Muchas veces he perdido el camino, pero a veces he encontrado algo interesante mientras andaba "perdido".
   Cuando salgo de casa mi coche va lleno de LIBROS Y MAPAS y la carga va aumentando durante el viaje.

Shetland: Selkies & Bonxies

   During my tour around Shetland I spent a lot of time taking photos of SELKIES & BONXIES (Seals and Great Skuas).
   It was wonderful going to search Selkies and approaching them carefully to take pictures. It was amazing to stay in the middle of the steppes on the cliffs taking photos of Bonxies while I was watching their powerful flight.
   Really, it was more interesting "to stay there" than the pictures I took, but the photos are in the computer and the memories remain only in my brain.

   Durante mi viaje por las Shetland pasé muchas horas sacando fotos de SELKIS y BONXIS (Focas y Págalos Grandes).
   Fue estupendo ir en busca de Selkis y aproximarse a ellas despacio para fotografiarlas. Fue emocionante estar en medio de la estepa de los acantilados sacando fotos de Bonxis mientras observaba su poderoso vuelo.
   Realmente, fue más interesante "estar allí" que las fotos que tomé, pero las fotos están en el ordenador y los recuerdos permanecen sólo en el cerebro.

Hermaness, at the edge of the world  /  Hermaness, en el fin del mundo

   The Road North in the UK finishes in Shetland.
   Most of people arrive at Shetland by air. They pack according to the demands of the airlines, they spend a lot of time at the terminals due to delays and transfers... and their plane land at Shetland.
   After renting a car at the airport they reach Hermaness, the Britain's most northerly point. Finally they can rest "sitting at the edge of the world", as the brochure says.
   The Road Photographer can't fly. Airlines don't accept cars on board, so he must take THE LONG WAY TO THE NORTH.

   La Carretera del Norte en el Reino Unido acaba en las Shetland.
   La mayoría de la gente llega a las Shetland en avión. Hacen sus maletas según las exigencias de las compañías aéreas, pasan un montón de horas en los aeropuertos por las demoras y transbordos... y su avión aterriza en las Shetland.
   Tras alquilar un coche en el aeropuerto llegan a Hermaness, el lugar británico más al norte. Por fin pueden descansar "sentados en el fin del mundo", como dice el folleto.
   El Fotógrafo de Carreteras no puede viajar en avión. Las compañías aéreas no admiten coches a bordo, así que debe tomar EL LARGO CAMINO DEL NORTE.

Strathglass

   When I heard about a place in Scotland named Affric, a Nature Reserve, I thought that it would be interesting going to Africa during a travel to Scotland.
   Two months ago I listened to the Scottish fiddler Duncan Chisholm at Aviles (Spain) and he played music of his Strathglass Trilogy (Farrar, Canaich, Affric) dedicated to the three rivers that flow into the Glass River.
   So I extended the route to the three Glens that come down from the mountains and the valley of Strathglass.

   Cuando supe que había un sitio en Escocia llamado Affric, una Reserva Natural, pensé que sería interesante ir a África durante un viaje a Escocia.
   Hace un par de meses escuché al violinista escocés Duncan Chisholm en Avilés, interpretando música de su Trilogía Strathglass (Farrar, Canaich, Affric) dedicada a los tres ríos que desembocan en el río Glass.
   Así que amplié la ruta a los tres Glens que bajan de las montañas y al valle de Strathglass.

   I was looking for a photograph when I stopped to refuel. I didn't know where Valentine had taken the Glencoe Pass photos in 19th century.
   The times have changed and sometimes it is difficult to identify a place after a lot of years, even in the everlasting Scotland.
   I asked the man of the petrol station, with the photo book on my hand...

   Andaba buscando una fotografía cuando paré a repostar. No sabía donde había tomado Valentine las fotos del Glencoe Pass en el siglo XIX.
   Los tiempos han cambiado y a veces es difícil identificar un lugar después de muchos años, incluso en la inmutable Escocia.
   Pregunté al empleado de la gasolinera, con el libro de fotos en la mano...

   I would like to be a Seal Photographer. I would wake up early in the morning and I would drive to my post on the Seals' Bay.
   Binoculars hanging on my neck, a backpack with the lenses on my back, my camera on the rigth hand and an umbrella on the left hand.
   I will put a tripod among the rocks and I would take photos of seals: resting, stretching, sleeping, crying or watching... watching the Seal Photographer.
   What a wonderful life !

   Me gustaría ser Fotógrafo de Focas. Me levantaría temprano y conduciría hasta mi puesto en la Bahía de las Focas.
   Prismáticos al cuello, la mochila con los objetivos a la espalda, mi cámara en la mano derecha y un paraguas en la mano izquierda.
   Plantaría el trípode entre las rocas y sacaría fotos de focas: descansando, estirándose, durmiendo, gritando y observando... observando al Fotógrafo de Focas.
   ¡ Menuda vida !

   After leaving the Outer Hebrides I went on the North way through the Scottish Highlands.
   I arrived to the Dunnet Head Lighthouse, most northerly point of mainland Britain and I could see the silhouette of the Orkney Islands far away, The North Route, but the time was over and I had to invert the track to come back home.
   Anyway in the Highlands and then at the St. Abb's cliffs I could take some photos of Roads, Seals and Birds.

   Después de dejar las Hébridas continué el camino del Norte a través de las Highlands escocesas.
   LLegué al faro de Dunnet Head, el punto más al norte de la isla de Gran Bretaña y pude ver la silueta de las Islas Orcadas a lo lejos, la Ruta del Norte, pero el tiempo se acababa y debía invertir el rumbo y volver a casa.
   De todas formas, en las Highlands y después en los acantilados de St. Abb pude sacar algunas fotos de Carreteras, Focas y Pájaros.

   Going North I followed the seaway through the Hebrides, The Western Isles, Eileanan Siar in gaelic.
   I crossed from Oban, on the mainland, to Barra, the southern island of Outer Hebrides, and I went up ferry by ferry until I reached the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse, the northernmost point in the Hebrides.
   It was an amazing trip along those marvellous islands.

   Subiendo al Norte tomé la ruta marítima de las Hébridas, las Islas del Oeste, Eileanan Siar en gaélico.
   Crucé desde Oban a Barra, la isla al sur de las Hébridas Exteriores, y pasando de ferry en ferry hasta alcanzar el faro del Butt de Lewis, el punto más al norte de las Hébridas.
   Un viaje muy interesante a lo largo de esas maravillosas islas.
